2012 Areas of Focus
Leading up to the university's 75th anniversary in 2012, the Alumni Leadership Council will be guided by the following "Areas of Focus."1. Brand
A. Encourage university to build and communicate our brand and mission in a bold, consistent way, across schools; strong focus on faith and reason
Role of ALC:
- Sounding board
- Advisor
- Ambassador
2. Service Initiative
A. Encourage President Andrew Benton to establish and communicate a national broad service platform by end of 2008
Role of ALC:
- Sounding board
- Advisor
- Ambassador
- Establishing metrics & milestones (ALC to do for year 09)
- Establish ALC Service Awards (by end of 09)
- Establish Alumni Leadership Institute (Using Lectureship as the model and involving all members of Pepperdine community - by 2012)
- Establish and use PAN (starting in 09)
Role of ALC:
- Leader (ALC has items to own
- Advisor
- Ambassador
3. Chapters/Affinity
A. Engage chapters and affinity groups in service initiatives tied to "Call to Action/Service."
Role of ALC:
- Mobilize alumni, students and parents
- Ambassador
- Hold Alumni Affairs accountable
- Alumni/Chapter Leadership Development
4. Student Cycle
A. Encourage culture change at Pepperdine
- Change recruitment process
- Treat students as #1 priority
- Bring in students who have a heart for service
- Acknowledge students as future alumni "cradle to grave"
Role of ALC:
- Involve alumni in selection process (by 2011)
- Mentoring programs (Start in 09 at local level; 2012 at national/international level using PAN as platform)
- Identify prospective students (by 2011 at local level partnering with admissions)
5. Professional/Career Development
A. Encourage the establishment of a mentoring culture at Pepperdine that begins when a new student enters and continues through life.
Concept:
- When a new student comes to any Pepperdine school they are assigned a mentor (upper-classman)
- Prior to graduation a student is assigned an alumni mentor in their chosen field or in a regional area
- After alumnus has been out of school for up to 5 years they can apply to be a mentor to a new graduate
- Older alumni are encouraged to mentor younger alumni and or students through-out their life
Role of ALC:
- Act as a sounding board to university functional areas and Deans to encourage this kind of culture and program
- Participate as mentors as programs emerge
- Encourage other alumni to participate
