Case for Support

Endowment Matters

Endowment is a deep well of carefully managed financial assets that will generate sustaining support far into the future. As the University moves confidently into a new century and approaches its 75th anniversary milestone, it is imperative that we grow the endowment to produce permanent resources for faculty chairs, scholarships, and innovative programs that keep pace with higher education and world progress.

Endowment support at Pepperdine undergirds excellence; it does not merely support operations. The difference was witnessed in the recent economic downturn as the University's financial condition remained strong, allowing continued progress on virtually all fronts. Certainly, we hope for sustained and growing endowment earnings, but we will not budget in a manner that relies upon endowment to the point that operations rise or fall with the financial markets. Endowment provides flexible funding for innovative academic programs, scholarships to recruit outstanding students, competitive salaries for faculty, and essential upgrades to facilities and technology.

Our aspiration remains: we must press forward to a level of endowment that places us among the top 50 universities in the country. Through the course of the campaign this milestone will be in our sights as we build an institution for the ages—and for every qualified student who dreams of a life-changing education at Pepperdine.
