History of the First University Chaplain
D’Esta Love was appointed as the first University Chaplain in 2001 and served the Pepperdine community until her retirement in 2007. Before accepting this role, D’Esta was an Adjunct Professor in the Religion Division, and served as the Dean of Students from 1989-2001. As the University Chaplain, she served as the Director of the Pepperdine Voyage Project, funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment for the theological exploration of vocation, from 2005-2006. During this time, she also taught graduate-level classes on vocation for the Religion Division. In 2008 she was named Chaplain Emerita by Provost Darryl Tippens. D’Esta still currently teaches as an Adjunct Professor in the Religion Divison, is actively involved in the Women in Ministry Network and the annual Women in Ministry conferences, and is co-editor of the Leaven Journal with her husband, Stuart Love. D’Esta is also a frequent, keynote speaker and participant at women’s retreats, marriage seminars, church lecture series, and academic conferences.
