Founded in 1964 as a church plant in an undeveloped part of the city, the College Church of Christ in Fresno continues to find progressive ways to engage its surrounding community. “It’s in our DNA,” says Jason Locke, preaching minister for the church. “We were founded, not out of a split, but out of a desire to reach an evolving community.”
The church has a growing ministry to the homeless and to local college students. In a more creative outreach effort, the College Church presents an annual car show with free food and games, drawing 2000 visitors from the community.
The College Church also has a global perspective, sponsoring mission works in Kenya, Germany, and Switzerland.
Today, the church finds itself in transition, working against the trend of decline that many churches seem to be experiencing in the West. There is a sense of renewal within the congregation and a growing confidence that the College Church will continue to offer a meaningful witness in Fresno and beyond.
In an attempt to encourage renewal within churches of Christ in the West, the College Church offers an annual conference called, appropriately enough, Renew. This program is offered in February and draws church leaders from the western US.
