The Campus Life Project - Fufilling our Long-term Approvals
The Campus Life Project includes improvements envisioned and approved 20 years ago through Pepperdine's long-term plans. Today, the project has evolved to add state-of-the-art environmental protections and become more efficient, while responding to input from our neighbors. Here are some highlights:
- Consistent with long-term planning goals approved by the County of Los Angeles and the California Coastal Commission
- Built within the existing campus footprint
- Eases rush hour congestion along Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road by adding on-campus student housing and eliminating 744 daily commuter trips
- Relocates the proposed Athletics and Events Center to the interior of the campus farther away from neighbors
- Implements green building design and construction practices to achieve LEED certification
• Maintains existing enrollment cap
- Replaces existing outdoor lighting within the project area with state-of-the-art shielded and directed lighting
- Creates 2,000 jobs in Los Angeles County and generates over $400 million in economic activity
Keeping Students on Campus and Reducing Daily Traffic
Adding 468 beds on campus enriches the students' campus experience, removes commuters from the roads, and results in a net decrease of daily rush hour traffic. The project:
- Updates existing housing and builds 468 new on-campus beds without increasing enrollment
- Achieves LEED certification for new student residences through sustainable design
- Decreases daily commuter traffic by 744 trips
- Provides student gathering areas and installs resident directors within new residence halls for in-the-moment mentoring and supervision
Upgrading Pepperdines 40-year-old Athletic Facilities
Pepperdine's 40-year old athletic facilities are in desperate need of an upgrade to meet NCAA standards and provide increased intramural and recreation opportunities for our students.
- Consolidates event venues by relocating and creating one new 5,000-seat Athletics and Events Center away from neighbors in a LEED Silver certified design
- Athletics and Events Center will contain 1,600 fewer seats than the facilities previously approved by the County and Coastal Commission in long-term plans
- Existing 3,674 spectator seats at Firestone Fieldhouse will be eliminated and facility will be used for student and community recreation
- Reconfigures existing track to enlarge soccer field and replace temporary seating
- Expands existing sports field for recreation and intramurals
- Replaces existing inefficient lighting within project area with state-of-the-art directed and shielded lighting
- Utilizes, for the first time in Southern California, new lighting technology for athletic fields, which meets the most stringent "dark sky" regulations
