WHAT IS THE STUDENT WEB SERVER?
The Student web server (students.pepperdine.edu) is a location on Pepperdine University's network where individual Pepperdine students may create and maintain information.

AVAILABILITY OF STUDENT WEB PAGES ON THE SERVER
Students who do not already have space assigned to them on the Student Web Server may contact the IT Help Desk at 310-506-HELP (4357) to request their space allocation of 50mb.  (Instructors may also contact the IT Help Desk on behalf of a student.)

There is no cost associated with this 50mb space allocation.  And no additional space may be requested.

When Information Technology creates a personal folder on students.pepperdine.edu for a student, the folder name will match the student's Network ID*.

CREATING STUDENT WEB PAGES ON THE SERVER
Students may use any web or html editor they choose to create web pages.  Check the Pepperdine Computer Store on the first floor of Tyler Campus Center for web editors for sale by them.  Regardless of how they were created, web pages can be posted to the student web page server.

Students who want to place information onto students.pepperdine.edu may do so using various methods (see "Connect Using" in Internet/Web Information for Student Web Server).

If you want people to be able to access your web by only your Network ID, your home page filename needs to be one of the default page names (preferably default.htm, but index.htm or index.html will also work).

This web server does not currently support the use of CGI, Perl or other scripting.

For this web service to function properly, several folders and files (some hidden) will be placed into the student's personal folder and should not be removed.

Viewable Folders:

  • _Private
  • Images

Hidden Folders:

  • _VTI_CNF
  • _VTI_Script
  • _VTI_TXT
  • _VTI_PVT (containing the files below)
  • shortcut to access
  • shortcut to service
  • shortcut to services
  • shortcut to svcacl
  • shortcut to uniqperm
  • service.lck

If a student needs assistance creating web pages, they should check Information Technology's Training web pages for information about instructor-led classes or SkillPort for self-help training.

VIEWING STUDENT WEB PAGES ON THE SERVER
Anyone may view a student's web pages by using their web browser to navigate to the URL:
      students.pepperdine.edu/networkID
(where networkID is the student's Network ID)

You can only view a student’s web pages if (1) you know a specific filename used by the student for one of his or her web pages, or (2) the student has used one of the default home page names (shown in the Creating Student Web Pages section of this document).

ACCESSING STUDENT WEB PAGES FOR UPDATING
Students must furnish appropriate credentials to add and maintain their web pages on this server.  When attempting to access their web space for this purpose students will need to enter their Network ID prefixed with its domain, usually "student\".  For example, Jane Marie Meyerson would enter her Network ID as "student\jmmeyers".  (Note that the server name is prefixed with "students" - plural - but the Network ID is prefixed with "student" - singular).
