Seaver College Honors Martin Luther King, Jr.

Seaver College will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. Umoja (Unity) Celebration on Monday, Jan. 19, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the School of Law Caruso Auditorium on the Malibu campus. The celebration will feature a presentation by best-selling author Stedman Graham, owner of leadership and strategy consulting company Stedman Graham & Associates and founder of Athletes Against Drugs. Graham will speak on the topic "Diversity: Leaders Not Labels."

The program includes a one-of-a-kind Martin Luther King, Jr. video clip presentation as well as remarks and blessings by ministers and Pepperdine professors Gary Selby, David Holmes, and Ken Durham. Following the Umoja Celebration event, Graham will sign copies of his books and engage in conversation with interested attendees.

In addition, a group of 50 Los Angeles-area high school students will get the opportunity that day to meet with Seaver students, attend Graham's lecture, and participate in a special leadership workshop led by Seaver students. The high school students are part of the organization Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), which works toward the goal of empowering young people, ages 6 to 19, from inner-city Los Angeles communities through a variety of arts, recreation, and education programs.

"Having Stedman Graham come to Pepperdine provides our students, community, and the attending high school students with a wonderful opportunity to interact with a renowned figure on leadership and ethics," says Rick Marrs, Seaver College dean. "Having him come during the week when we celebrate the phenomenal impact of Martin Luther King, Jr. on our society only increases the significance of the moment. We are delighted that Stedman Graham will engage our Seaver students in this meaningful topic."

Tickets are free to Seaver students, faculty, and staff, and are priced at $10 each for the general public. Tickets may be purchased through the Smothers Theatre box office by calling (310) 506-4522.
