Pepperdine Hosts Human Rights Activist Eric Volz, Author of Gringo Nightmare

On Thursday, September 2nd, the Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture will partner with the Nootbaar Institute’s International Human Rights Program at the School of Law to bring author and human rights activist Eric Volz to Pepperdine University. The author of Gringo Nightmare will speak first at a law school luncheon from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed by a public presentation and book signing at Payson Library, Malibu, from 4 p.m.

Gringo Nightmare is a true-to-life account of Volz's experience with injustice in Nicaragua. While working as a journalist in the Central American country in 2006, Volz was arrested, accused of murder, and spent over a year in prison without evidence or precedent. As Volz languished in prison, family and friends in the United States campaigned for justice on his behalf.

"We’re honored to bring Eric Volz and his harrowing story to Pepperdine," says Craig Detweiler, director of the Center for Entertainment, Media, and Culture. "At a campus concerned about human rights abuses, Eric’s case is a haunting reminder that when traveling abroad, injustice can lead to arrest and imprisonment even for the innocent. This is a cautionary tale we all need to heed."
