Pepperdine Hosts Emilio Estevez and Screens His New Film, The Way
Emilio Estevez will give the Pepperdine community a special sneak preview of his new film, The Way, on Tuesday, Mar. 9, followed by a post-screening discussion. The Center for Entertainment, Media, and Culture (EMC) will host Estevez from 7 p.m. in Elkins Auditorium, Malibu.

The film stars Malibu's own Martin Sheen, and tells the father-son story of acceptance set against the gorgeous landscape of northern Spain's historic pilgrimage route of St. James, "El Camino Santiago." Sheen plays an American doctor, Tom, who arrives in Europe to collect the body of his recently deceased adult son, who was killed while walking the St. James route. Instead of returning to America, however, Tom decides to finish his son's pilgrimage.
"The Way is such a timely project about a timeless place," comments Craig Detweiler, director of the EMC. "We're proud to spotlight the artistry of accomplished fathers and sons like Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen, and thrilled to preview Emilio's first film since the acclaimed Bobby."
Estevez, who started his career as an actor in such well-known films as The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire, wrote and directed The Way hot on the heels of the success of his last film, Bobby. The film was a fictional look at the intersecting lives of a group of people present at the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, including hotel staff, Los Angeles citizens, and campaign volunteers. Estevez won the Venice Film Festival Biografilm Award, and was nominated for the festival's Golden Lion Award. He was also the recipient of the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for directing.
Estevez made his directorial debut with the 1987 film, Wisdom, starring Demi Moore, for which he became the youngest person to ever write, direct, and star in a single major motion picture. Next came his action/comedy, Men at Work, in which he co-starred with his real-life brother Charlie Sheen, and he followed it with a post-Vietnam War drama, The War at Home, featuring Kathy Bates and his father, Martin Sheen.
