Student Club Courier 12 Hosts Buffy and Once Upon a Time Writer Jane Espenson
The master of fine arts (MFA) program in Screen and Television Writing at Seaver College will host prolific television writer Jane Espenson, whose career credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Once Upon a Time, on Thursday, Apr. 19. Espenson will discuss her career from 8 p.m. in the Hahn Fireside Room, Malibu.
Espenson's television writing credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Torchwood, and Once Upon a Time. She is the co-creator, writer, and producer of an original web series, Husbands, which premiered online in September 2011. She won a Hugo Award for her work writing the script to an episode of Buffy titled, "Conversations with Dead People," and served, at various times, as a writer, story editor, and producer during her five years with the show and as a co-executive producer of the series' last season. Espenson received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley.
The MFA program launched in the fall of 2008 under the directorship of Leslie Kreiner Wilson, and takes a unique values-centered approach to nurturing and supporting the storyteller as cultural leader. The program is a groundbreaking new degree for Pepperdine and the university's first MFA program.
Wilson notes that Pepperdine's approach to the MFA emphasizes screenwriting as vocation. "We believe that writers don't have to think about their career on one road and their belief systems and values on another road," she says. "Rather, we'd like to encourage writers to intersect those two roads. At that intersection is where cultural transformation occurs."
Questions may be directed in advance to Courier 12 president Eric Martin. Complementary coffee and cookies will be provided.
This event is free and open to all. For more information, contact Leslie Kreiner at (310) 506-7152 or visit the MFA Web site.
