String and Guitar Ensembles Perform International Works in Showcase Concert

Pepperdine’s string and guitar ensembles will perform a concert Friday, Dec. 7, featuring works by Bach, Schubert, and Joaquin Rodrigo. The free concert, part of the Mary Pickford-Stotsenberg Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Raitt Recital Hall, Malibu.

The guitar ensemble is coached by Christopher Parkening, Distinguished Professor of Music and chair in Classical Guitar, and Anastasios Comanescu, adjunct faculty in the music department; the string ensemble is coached by Lisa Dondlinger, adjunct faculty in the music department.

Students will perform an international array of compositions that span the centuries—from Violin Concerto in E Major, BWV 1042, by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), to Boliviana by the contemporary Brazilian musician Celso Machado.

Music students at Pepperdine can showcase their talents in many different ensembles, including String Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Pepperdine University Orchestra, Piano Accompanying, Piano Chamber Music, Collegium Musicum Novum, and Pepperdine University major choral ensembles. The guitar program in particular has flourished under the direction of Christopher Parkening.
