Pepperdine Brass and Percussion Ensembles Perform Concert
The Brass and Percussion Ensembles in Pepperdine’s Fine Arts Division will perform a concert on Monday, Nov. 19. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Raitt Recital Hall, Malibu.
The Brass Ensemble is directed by Tony Cason, University Conductor. Cason joined Pepperdine in 2005 having served as the Deputy Commander of The United States Army Band, "Pershing's Own", in Washington, D.C. There he served as the musical director of The United States Army Orchestra, The United States Army Strings, and the world renowned United States Army Herald Trumpets. Cason was also the Principle Director of Music for the Virginia International Military Tattoo in Norfolk, Virginia. At Pepperdine he conducts, in addition to the Brass Ensemble, the University Orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, and the Pep Band.
The Percussion Ensemble, led by percussionist Scott Higgins, performs music that is as diverse as the world studying works from different cultures. The instrumentation varies with each piece, providing an opportunity to excel on both American and ethnic instruments.
Higgins has been a freelance percussionist in Los Angeles since 1975. Groups that he performs with on a regular basis include The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pasadena. Santa Barbara, New West and Long Beach Symphonies. From 1976 to 2005 he was a frequent extra player with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has recorded with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl, Long Beach and Santa Barbara orchestras. His work in Opera and Ballet include Los Angeles Opera, Joffery Ballet, ABT, and New York City Ballet. For the past 20 tears he has also been very involved in the performance of New Music.
