Frederick R. Weisman Museum Celebrates 20th Anniversary
The Frederick R. Weisman Museum will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a reception Thursday, Nov. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Malibu campus.
Since 1992, the Weisman Museum has brought to campus a series of art exhibitions that are engaging, stimulating and thought-provoking, by artists ranging from the 19th century Romantic sculptor Rodin to contemporary glass artist Dale Chihuly.
The current exhibition, "Pop Culture," explores how artists since the 1960s have challenged the elitism of "high art," by drawing inspiration from popular art–from the advertisements, commercials, billboards, and entertainment that surround us every day. On view are classic examples of vintage pop art from the 1960s, such as Andy Warhol's iconic Marilyn Monroe, as well as works by younger artists who find new ways to interact with our dynamic visual world.
This exhibition, organized to mark the Weisman Museum's formal dedication on September 12, 1992, explores the roots of this movement as well as the way subsequent generations of artists have drawn inspiration from popular culture.
