The Pickford Ensemble, comprised of select students in the Fine Arts Division, includes flute, oboe, horn, percussion, piano, violin, viola, cello, and contrabass sections. A subset of the ensemble, the Pickford String Quartet, will perform a concert of chamber music Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Raitt Recital Hall, Malibu.
Directed by Lisa Dondlinger, the performance will feature movements from Franz Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" (String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor) and Maurice Ravel's String Quartet in F Major.
This performance is part of the Mary Pickford Foundation Music Project at Pepperdine, which endeavors to train young composers and performing musicians in the art and presentation of silent film scoring.
Composing for a select chamber ensemble comprised entirely of collegiate instrumentalists, student composers will learn to develop an effective music score for live players that supports the visual drama on the screen. The Pepperdine student instrumentalists who will perform this music would also learn the special and valuable discipline of performing along with another linear artistic medium such as silent film, which requires the performer to be constantly "on and present" at every moment.
