Michael Zakian Presents Lecture on “Superheroes and Scripture”

Michael Zakian, director of the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, will present a discussion on today's superheroes and their relation to the Old Testament at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Weisman Museum, Malibu.

Between the years of 1930 and 1960, a number of Jewish immigrant writers and artists developed the idea of the superhero, seen originally in comic book characters Superman, Batman, and Spiderman. Zakian's lecture will discuss the origin of the superhero and show the connections between the comic book world and tales from the Old Testament, such as the life of Superman being a retelling of the story of Moses. Zakian will explore the way Old Testament themes presented in these superhero stories has been absorbed into America's Christian society, with examples of comparative religion and religious tolerance.
