The guitar students of Christopher Parkening will present a concert of classical music in Payson Library's Surfboard Room, Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. This is the first in a series of monthly concerts to be held in the Surfboard Room, the second Tuesday of each month. The students will present pieces they have been studying with Parkening, who is ranked as one of the world's preeminent virtuosos of the classical guitar.
Having performed around the world, including at such prestigious places as Carnegie Hall and the White House, The Washington Post cited Parkening as "the leading guitar virtuoso of our day combining profound musical insight with complete technical mastery of his instrument." His television appearances include the Grammy Awards, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Good Morning America, and 20/20. He has recorded over 20 albums and earned two Grammy nominations in the category of "Best Classical Recording."
Parkening is the Distinguished Professor of Music at Pepperdine University and has chaired the Christopher Parkening Chair in Classical Guitar since the fall of 2002. The Parkening International Guitar Competition, honoring Parkening's lifetime commitment to fostering musical excellence in young artists, is held every four years.
