Acclaimed artist Phoebe Beasley will present a pop-up exhibition of her work in Payson Library on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.
Beasley is the only artist to twice receive the honor of the coveted Presidential Seal on her work. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Her collage artwork has been part of two major museum exhibitions, including a group show mounted by the Smithsonian Institution entitled "In the Spirit of Martin," and a museum touring exhibition, "Something All Our Own: The Grant Hill Collection." She collaborated with Dr. Maya Angelou for a limited edition book featuring poems by Langston Hughes and serigraphs from Beasley.
Her work is owned by a range of collectors, including Oprah Winfrey, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, and The Kinsey Collection features pieces by Beasley. She served for 15 years as a commissioner on the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and volunteers her creative efforts by conducting workshops at an orphanage and a shelter for adults and children.
