Rabbi David Stein Explores Gender References in the Hebrew Bible
Rabbi David Stein, a lecturer in Biblical Hebrew at the American Jewish University and former revising editor for "The Contemporary Torah: A Gender-Sensitive Adaptation of the JPS Translation," will discuss a series of challenges and methods in translating gender references in the Hebrew Bible.
"Understanding and Translating Gender References in the Hebrew Bible," which will take place Monday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. in Payson Library's Surfboard Room, will equip students to understand how gender was conceptualized in ancient Israel, how gender is referenced in biblical texts, and contemporary methods of reading and translating these references in light of our own cultural standards.
Associate professor of religion Christopher Heard will introduce Rabbi Stein and facilitate an open Q&A following the lecture.
