On Monday, Feb. 10, a pre-screening of the inspiring movie Beyond Sight will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Elkins Auditorium, Malibu.
Beyond Sight documents the story of blind surfer Derek Rabelo, 21, who embarked on a three-year journey of grueling mental, physical, and spiritual training to surf the Banzai Pipeline, a surf reef break located on O'ahu's North Shore, often considered the world's most challenging wave.
Surfers from all over the world congregate at the Pipeline to take on the nine-foot waves. Rabelo caught media attention in February of 2012 with a YouTube video of himself surfing Pipe, blind. Makua Rothman, an American professional surfer, said of Rabelo, "I jumped off the beach and tried to paddle out with him closing my eyes and I couldn't even do it...I never told him when the white wash was coming, and he just duck-dived it perfectly."
As Rabelo perseveres towards his goal of surfing Pipeline, he inspires the best pro-surfers in the world including Kelly Slater, Damien Hobgood, Rob Machado, Lakey Peterson, Taj Burrow, Laird Hamilton, and more, who are featured in the film. Rabelo insists that the best journeys in life are walked by faith and not by sight.
Although the event is free, registration is required. To RSVP, visit the Beyond Sight event registration page.
