Gretchen Batcheller

Assistant professor of studio art, Seaver College

  • B.F.A. in painting and B.A. in German language and literature, University of Washington; M.F.A. in painting from Temple University
  • Batcheller served as the art department chair at Emory and Henry College
  • She was recently commissioned to illustrate a novel, titled Third Wish
  • Her favorite artist is the British painter, Jenny Saville. "In the early '90's she pursued ideas of femininity and challenged body image perceptions. Her paintings are glorious – they are beautiful pastures of color."
  • She approaches teaching studio art as though teaching problem solving skills to her students on a wider scale. "I'm very open in the ways I wrestle with my own work to create compelling pieces - from finding answers in the shades of grey of my own life," she says. "What do you do when you don't know what to do, and you don't know the answers? I teach students that problem solving in composition translates to life."
