Rodney Honeycutt has been an associate editor for Evolution, Journal of Heredity, Molecular Biology & Evolution, and Journal of Mammalian Evolution. His key affiliations include membership in the American Society of Mammalogists, Society for the Study of Evolution, Society of Systematic Biology, and the Wildlife Society. He is on the editorial board for Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution and BMC Evolutionary Biology, and was elected council member to the Society of Systematic Biologists. Honeycutt has also been awarded several National Science Foundation grants.

In addition to lecturing at numerous universities across the county and throughout the world, he has participated in several field research projects in Central America, Europe, South America, Australia, Africa, and Mexico. Honeycutt has also served as a consultant for documentaries on the Discovery Channel and for Nova.
