Prior to becoming a professor, Michael Murrie had a successful career in broadcast journalism including positions as news producer and assignment editor for major market television newscasts, where he produced more than 1,000 newscasts as well as news specials and feature segments.

He has written more than 100 articles in television and journalism professional publications including Broadcasting & Cable, RTNDA Communicator, Television Broadcast, Columbia Journalism Review and Quill. In 1985, Murrie received an Emmy for Best News Broadcast from the St. Louis Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
