Dr. Church received her doctoral degree in school psychology with cognate studies in educational psychology and literacy. Prior to joining the Pepperdine faculty, Church was an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Department of Elementary Education at Ball State University and an associate professor at Anderson University in the Midwest. Since arriving at Pepperdine, Church has received the Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence, been widely published, and presented at national and international conferences.

Church's work in social cognition and social emotional development of children stems from her post doctoral work and experiences as a consulting psychologist. She has experience as a grant writer and project director, and has supervised student teachers and doctoral students. Church has also worked with professional development schools for over a decade and continues that work at Pepperdine with EARTHS Magnet School. Her teaching experience includes child and adolescent development, learning, educational psychology, research in education, study strategies, capstone seminar, exceptional children, teacher identity and vocation, literacy instruction, assessment, language acquisition, and language arts methods.

Cara Garcia came to Pepperdine University from the Los Angeles Unified School District where she was a teacher and teacher advisor. She teaches methods courses, chairs dissertations and supervises educational therapy services offered through the clinic at Pepperdine. Her research interests focus on academic anxiety, specifically reading and writing blocks, test anxiety, stage fright, and math anxiety.

Garcia is the author of Too Scared to Learn, which offers a clear, dynamic rationality and methodology for dealing with children who have academic anxiety. Garcia has been quoted as an expert in several publications including the Los Angeles Times.
