American Mathematical Society Web site, April 2005 - Pepperdine University is featured on the Web site for the American Mathematical Society, who held a high school math contest titled “Who Wants to Be a Mathematician” on Apr. 8 at the Malibu campus.

Orange County Register, Apr. 1, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, wrote an op-ed article titled “We Can't Move on Just yet” about how the Terri Schiavo case has impacted the relationship between law and morality.

San Francisco Chronicle, Apr. 1, 2005 – David Davenport, distinguished professor of public policy, was quoted in an article titled “A Very Public Death Prompts Many to Have Very Private Discussions” about how the Terri Schiavo case has led other families to hold blunt discussions about dying.

Ventura County Star, Apr. 1, 2005 – Barry MacDonald, professor of law, and Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, were quoted in an article titled “Long Legal Dispute Might Help Clarify end-of-life Issues” about the effects of the Terri Schiavo case.

Detroit Free Press, Apr. 1, 2005 – David Davenport, distinguished professor of public policy, was quoted in an article titled “The Schiavo Legacy: Legal, Political, Medical” about the effects of the Terri Schiavo case.

The Daily Pilot, Apr. 1, 2005 – Karen Martin, professor of biology, is quoted in an article titled “Runnin' to Greet the Grunion” about volunteers in Newport Beach awaiting the annual arrival of the elusive silver fish, as part of Pepperdine’s Grunion Greeter project. Professor Martin is heading the study on the habits of the grunion.

Christian Science Monitor, Apr. 1, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “The Terri Schiavo Legacy” about the unresolved legal and political issues surrounding the right-to-die debate.

FoxNews.com, Apr. 1, 2005 – School of Law Dean, Ken Starr, is quoted in an article titled “GOP Goes on Judicial Offensive” about whether or not the judicial system needs to be reformed in light of the Terri Schiavo case.

San Francisco Chronicle, Apr. 2, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “Schiavo Case Widens Divide Between Congress and Courts” about the continuing tension between Congress and the judicial system.

San Diego Union-Tribune, Apr. 3, 2005 – David Davenport and Gordon Lloyd, professors of public policy, wrote an op-ed article titled “Does Federalism Still Matter?” about the effects of Congress passing special legislation to open the federal courts to the Terri Schiavo case.

The Seattle Times, Apr. 4, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “Analysts Split in Assessing Courts' Role in Schiavo Case” about the Supreme Court’s decision not to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case.

Abu Dhabi TV, Apr. 4, 2005 – Khalil E. Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C., internship program, was interviewed on Abu Dhabi TV to discuss the upcoming visit by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to Washington and the disagreement between the U.S. and Israel over the issue of  Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories.

Ventura County Star, Apr. 5, 2005 – Jeffrey Zalar, assistant professor of history, Paul Contino, associate professor of Great Books, and Joel Nichols, assistant professor at the School of Law, were quoted in an article titled “New Leader Must Balance Needs in a Changing World, Some Say” about the challenges the next pope faces in today’s society.

New York Times, Apr. 10, 2005 – James Q. Wilson, Ronald Reagan professor of public policy, is quoted in an article titled “The Beast That Feeds on Boxes: Bureaucracy” about the increase of bureaucracy within the U.S. Government.

San Diego Union-Tribune, Apr. 13, 2005 – Karen Martin, Frank R. Seaver Chair of Biology, is quoted in an article titled “Grunion Watchers Part of Nature-Tracking Trend” which features Professor Martin’s “Grunion Greeters Project” which involves hundreds of volunteers who are tracking the silverfish from San Diego to San Francisco.

Rocky Mountain News, April 13, 2005 – Trinity Thorpe, a Seaver Student was quoted in an article titled, “Bronco tackles politics to save Upward Bound” about her involvement with Upward Bound, a non-profit organization that seeks out poverty-stricken children and helps them become college bound. Trinity, as well as Denver Bronco starting tackle, George Foster spoke before the Senate about their experience with the program.

The Las Vegas Review Journal, Apr. 14, 2005 – Dave McMahon, professor at the Graziadio School of Business and Management, was quoted in an article titled “Hurry Up And Wait: The Bottom Line” about the science behind long lines and what companies can do to reduce the time consumers spend waiting.

Ventura County Star, April 15, 2005 – Pepperdine University and board member, George Foreman were featured in an article titled, “Contest subjects teams to grilling” about the George Foreman College Grill-off that took place on campus on April 14. The event was filmed by the Food Network and is set to Air on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.

Daily Bruin, April 15, 2005 – Ken Starr, Dean of the School of Law was mention in an article titled, “Panel discusses influence of public, media on judicial autonomy.”  Dean Starr was part of the panel that took place at UCLA Law School on April 14.

Al-Arabiyya TV (Dubai), Apr. 15, 2005 - Khalil E. Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C., internship program, discussed U.S. policy on democratization in the Arab World. Professor Jahshan was also interviewed by Radio Orient (France) regarding the situations in Lebanon and Syria.

North County Times, Apr. 17, 2005 – Karen Martin, professor of biology, is quoted in an article titled “Volunteers Observe Annual Arrival of Grunion” about Pepperdine’s Grunion Greeters Project designed to study the behavior of the fish with the help of volunteers.

The Observer, Apr. 18, 2005 – School of Law dean, Ken Starr, was quoted in an article titled “Students, Professors Examine Death Penalty” about a program at Notre Dame University where law students come face-to-face with death row inmates. Students met death row inmate Robin Lovitt, a pro bono client of Dean Starr’s.

Fox News Channel, Apr. 18, 2005 – School of Law dean, Ken Starr, was also interviewed on the program “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren,” regarding the Robin Lovitt case and the issue of DNA testing.

ABC’s Nightline, Apr. 21, 2005 – School of Law dean, Ken Starr, appeared on the show discussing judicial independence, nominees and the state of the judiciary today.

NPR's KPCC, Apr. 22, 2005 - Shelley Saxer, professor at the School of Law, was interviewed on the radio program "Talk of the City" with Kitty Felde, about sex offenders and real estate transactions, the subject of a law review article Professor Saxer wrote about four years ago.

Al-Riyadh Daily (Saudi Arabia), April 24, 2005 – Khalil E. Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C. Internship Program, wrote an op-ed article titled, "The Crawford Summit: A New Page in US-Saudi Relations" about the proposed agenda and prospects for the upcoming meeting between President Bush and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.

Saudi Television, April 26, 2005 – Khalil E. Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C. Internship Program, appeared on Saudi TV to analyze the joint statement issued by President Bush and Crown Prince Abdullah at the conclusion of their Crawford summit.

Los Angeles Daily News, Apr. 27, 2005 - Gary Galles, professor of economics, wrote an op-ed article titled “Judicial Critics Opposing Constitution Supporter” about the continuing fight over federal court appointments.

National Review, Apr. 27, 2005 – School of Law dean, Ken Starr, co-authored an article titled “High-Tech Federalism” about the role of state regulators in a telecommunications age.

Washington Post, Apr. 27, 2005 - Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, is quoted in an article titled “U.S. Contests Terrorist's Request for Reduced Sentence” about the fate of Ahmed Ressam who was convicted for planning to bomb Los Angeles International Airport during the millennium celebrations.

BBC Radio Asia Network, Apr. 28, 2005 - Colleen Graffy, academic director of the School of Law's London Program, was interviewed about a memo that was leaked to the press which was written by the United Kingdom’s Attorney General regarding the legality of the war on Iraq. Professor Graffy was also interviewed by BBC Radio Scotland on the same subject.

American Council on Education, Apr. 28, 2005 – Pepperdine senior Ileana Abreau is quoted in an article titled “Pepperdine Student Tells House Appropriations Subcommittee About the Importance of Student Aid” about her testimony last week in front of the United States House of Representatives, Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies.

Al-Arabiyya Network (Dubai), April 28, 2005 – Khalil E. Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C. Internship Program, was interviewed by Al-Arabiyya to offer commentary on a new one-hour documentary about corporate corruption and the reconstruction of Iraq.

American Council on Education, Apr. 29, 2005 – Pepperdine junior Trinity Thorpe is quoted in an article titled “Senate Committee Holds Hearing on HEA Reauthorization” about her testimony last week in front of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Casper Star Tribune, Apr. 29, 2005 – Trinity Thorpe is quoted in an article titled “Wyo Student Testifies in D.C.” about her testimony before a U.S. Senate panel in Washington, DC last week about the importance of federal funding for financial aid programs. Thorpe is from Laramie, Wyoming.

Los Angeles Times, Apr. 30, 2005 – Mike Shires, associate professor at the School of Public Policy, is quoted in an article titled “Villaraigosa to Face Probe of Donations” about questions surrounding campaign contributions for Los Angeles mayoral candidate Antonio Villaraigosa.

Republican-American, Apr 30, 2005 – Michael Shires, associate professor at the School of Public Policy, is quoted in an article titled “Waterbury Gets Business Boost” about Inc. Magazine’s second annual "The Best Places for Doing Business in America" survey. Professor Shires compiled the rankings in the story.
