San Francisco Chronicle, Nov. 2, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, is quoted in an article titled “Alito's Telling Dissent in Machine Gun Case” about Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito’s lone dissenting opinion as a federal appeals court judge in 1996 arguing that the federal ban on possessing machine guns was unconstitutional.
Los Angeles Daily News, Nov. 2, 2005 – Lee Kats, professor of biology, was quoted in an article titled “Native Frogs, Newts Getting Crowded Out” about a new study of the streams in the Santa Monica Mountains that shows that even protected areas such as national and state parks are being altered by urbanization, making them unsuitable for native frogs and salamanders.
The Christian Science Monitor, Nov. 4, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled, “Should Senators Ask Alito About the Role of His Faith?” about nominee, Judge Samuel Alito, who would become the fifth Catholic among the nine justices on the Supreme Court.
Radio Monte Carlo (France), Nov. 5, 2005 – Khalil Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C. internship program, was interviewed about the recent United Nations Security Council resolution calling for Syrian cooperation with the United Nations’ investigation of the assassination last February of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

AllAfrica.com, Nov. 7, 2005 – Robert Lloyd, chair and professor of international relations in the International Studies and Languages Division, was mentioned in an article titled “All is Set for the Run-Off, Gen Abubarkar, Others Arrive” about the Nov. 8 elections in Liberia. Professor Lloyd is part of an international delegation sent to Liberia to ensure integrity in Liberia's electoral process.

Galles, professor of economics, wrote an op-ed article titled “If It's So Easy to Opt Out, Do it Now” about failed Proposition 75, which would have required public-employee unions to obtain members' permission before using their dues for political activities.
Al–Arabiyya Network, Nov. 11, 2005 – Khalil Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C. internship program, was interviewed on "Across the Ocean" to analyze the root causes of the ongoing riots in France and the differences between the American and French models of immigration and assimilation. He also appeared on Nov. 9 on Al-Arabiyya’s "The Fourth Estate" program to discuss American media coverage of the riots in France and the results of the off-year November 8 elections.

Malibu Times, Nov. 22, 2005 – Students for the Defense of Democracy, a student organization at Pepperdine, was featured in an article titled, “Expert Speaks on Terrorism,” about how the club hosted a lecture by Dr. Walid Phares who spoke about his new book, Future Jihad, and the roots of terrorism on Nov. 14.
CBS Sportsline.com, Nov. 23, 2005 – Pepperdine’s men’s basketball coach Paul Westphal was featured in a story titled “Holiday Reminds Westphal of Special Friendship” about Cotton Fitzsimmons, his friend and mentor who was head coach of the Phoenix Suns when Westphal was an assistant. Fitzsimmons passed away in 2004.
Los Angeles Times, Nov. 23, 2005 - Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled, “Terror Suspect Indicted After 3 Years in Jail,” about Jose Padilla, a U.S. citizen who was indicted for operating a terrorist cell in Canada and the United States.
Orbit Channel, Nov. 25, 2005 – Khalil E. Jahshan, executive director of the Washington, D.C. Internship Program, appeared on the Cairo-based television station to discuss the impact of post-9/11 changes in the United States on the lives of Arab and Muslim Americans.

Bloomberg.com, Nov. 29, 2005 - Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “Abortion Case Offers U.S. Chief Justice Chance to Reshape Law” about how new U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts will get his first chance to rule on abortion with a case that may insulate parental-notification laws and other restrictions from legal challenges.
Chicago Tribune, Nov. 29, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “Should Alito's Philosophy be Fair Game?” about the upcoming confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito and whether it's fair game for Democrats to oppose him based on his strongly conservative philosophy alone.
Legal Times, Nov. 29, 2005 – Douglas Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “Inside the Alito Memo” about Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito’s now-infamous 1985 application for a deputy assistant attorney general slot at the Office of Legal Counsel, which expressed his conservative principles.
Associated Press, Nov. 30, 2005 - School of Law Dean Ken Starr was mentioned in an article titled “Governor Spares Convicted Murderer” about how the governor of Virginia overturned the death sentence of Robin Lovitt. Dean Starr was part of Lovitt’s defense team. Lovitt will instead serve a life sentence without parole for stabbing a man to death with a pair of scissors during a 1988 pool hall robbery. Last spring, Dean Starr presented his moot court argument before a distinguished panel of professors and students at Pepperdine and explained the serious problems with the trial and post-trial proceedings.
Dean Starr’s work on the case was also featured in an article in the New York Times on Nov. 30, 2005, titled “Clemency Stops an Execution in Virginia.”
Santa Monica Mirror, Nov. 30, 2005 – Pepperdine’s Weisman Museum of Art was mentioned in an article titled, “‘Zelda by Herself’ at Pepperdine” about the museum’s exhibit of the art of Zelda Fitzgerald on display until Sunday, Dec. 18.
Orange County Register, Nov. 30, 2005 – Gary Galles, professor of economics, wrote an op-ed article titled “Twain's View of Government Borne Out,” in honor of the birthday of Marc Twain, author and political skeptic, who was born 170 years ago.
