Slate, February 22, 2007 – Doug Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, wrote an op-ed titled “Up in Smoke: The Supreme Court Loses its Unanimity,” wherein he argues that the Supreme Court’s majority opinion in the recently decided Phillip Morris case did not clarify the law surrounding punitive damages previously awarded to a cigarette smoker’s widow. San Francisco Chronicle, February 21, 2007 – Gary Galles, professor of economics, wrote an op-ed titled “Keep Government out of Our Nest Eggs,” which discusses the oft-noted statistic that most Americans do not save properly for retirement. USA Today, February 20, 2007 – Marshall Nickels, professor of economics at the Graziadio School of Business and Management, was referenced in an article titled “Stocks Usually Thrive as Presidential Election Nears," which cites Nickels' 2004 study to suggest that it often is profitable for investors to be more aggressive in the stock market in the year prior to a presidential election. Daily Southtown.com, February 20, 2007 – Steven Sultanoff, adjunct professor of psychology at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, was quoted in an article titled “New Type of Yoga Class is One Big Joke,” which discusses the health and psychological benefits of laughter yoga, a relatively new stress-relieving therapy. Congressional Quarterly, February 19, 2007 – School of Law dean Ken Starr was featured in an article titled “New Champion for an Old Cause,” which profiles his recent work in capital punishment cases, and notes that while Starr remains a “non-abolitionist” on capital punishment, he contends that the death penalty system needs reform.

FindLaw.com, February 19, 2007 – Doug Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, wrote an op-ed titled “Assessing Chief Justice John Roberts at Mid-Term: Why He Deserves Kudos for his Ability to Lead the Supreme Court to Speak in One Constitutional Voice,” which reviews the Chief Justice’s accomplishments to-date, and argues that he has served the High Court, and the country, well thus far. HomeWord.org, February 15, 2007 – Sara Jackson, representing the Pepperdine Center for the Family, was a guest commentator in a segment titled “The Importance of Romance and Physical Intimacy" on the radio program HomeWord with Jim Burns, during which she discussed intimacy in marriage with host Jim Burns. Listen to the segment. Jackson also discussed the issue of marital harmony on the same program in a segment titled “Is It Wrong to Want to Try to Change My Spouse?” on February 16. California Republic.org, February 16, 2007 – Gary Galles, professor of economics, wrote an op-ed titled “Booker T. Washington” which features inspirational quotations made by Washington, a former slave and tireless advocate of self-improvement. Read the article.

Daily Breeze, February 15, 2007 – Waves golfer and Seaver College freshman Misun Cho was featured in an article titled “Cho, Waves Take Challenge Titles,” which discusses Cho's individual championship and the success of the Pepperdine women's golf team at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club. KTLA- TV, February 1, 2007 – School of Law Dean Ken Starr appeared on Prime Time news along with ABC Correspondent, Jan Crawford Greenburg, during which the two briefly commented on anecdotes explained in Greenburg’s new book Supreme Conflict. The segment also featured information on Greenburg's appearance and book signing at the Pepperdine School of Law, an event that involved Doug Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, and other visiting Constitutional scholars.

USA Today, February 15, 2007 – Seaver College senior Brendan Groves was recognized in USA Today's annual all-USA college academic team program as a member of the “College Academic All-Stars: Second Team,” noting his initiative in designing curriculum for the Step UP Employment Training Program to teach youth with criminal backgrounds how to get and keep a job. Los Angeles Times, February 15, 2007 – Daniel Pipes, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy, is mentioned in an article titled “Jewish Group to Investigate Alleged Anti-Semitic Incidents at UC Irvine,” which describes an investigation of anti-Semitism at the University of California at Irvine, organized by the Orange County-based Hillel Foundation. Wall Street Journal, February 13, 2007 – Mike Shires, associate professor of public policy, was featured in an article titled, “The Myth of ‘Superstar Cities,’” which describes how smaller cities such as Houston, Dallas, and Phoenix—rather than larger metropolises like Los Angeles and New York—have created the most new jobs and gained the most net domestic migration in the past fifteen years. Slate, February 8, 2007 – Research conducted by Diana Hiatt-Michael, professor of education at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, is referenced in an article titled “Natural Enemies: How to Improve the Dreaded Parent-Teacher Conference," which proposes that parental attendance at parent-teacher conferences held by most public schools could be improved if the students attend as well. First Amendment Center.org, February 7, 2007 – School of Law dean Ken Starr was quoted in an article titled “Starr: Death-penalty Cases Merit Better News Coverage,” which discusses the consensus reached by a panel of experts, including Dean Starr, at a recent Nashville conference that the press has an obligation to report on capital punishment and the public should pay attention. The Weekly Standard, February 5, 2007 – Daniel Pipes, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy, was featured in an article, written by former Pepperdine Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy Joseph Loconte, titled "The World of Red Ken: The Mayor of London Debates Daniel Pipes," which summarizes the debate between Pipes and London mayor Ken Livingstone about the British approach to counter-terrorism. Detroit News, January 31,2007 – Doug Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in an article titled “Spying Case Appeal Begins,” which describes an appeal of a decision by a federal judge in Detroit that the domestic spying program operated by the Bush administration without court authorization is unconstitutional and illegal. Nashville City Paper, January 22, 2007 – Troy Senik, graduate student at the School of Public Policy and research fellow at the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, wrote an op-ed titled “Minimum Wage Hike Means Maximum Harm for Working Poor,” which addresses economic flaws in Congress's proposal to increase the federal minimum wage. KTLA, January 19, 2007 – Doug Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, was quoted in a news segment for his thoughts about President Bush’s wartime powers. The news segment was taped and aired on the occasion of the recent School of Law symposium on the War on Terrorism, which examined the roles of Congress, the courts, and the President in this unique war.

From the Top, January 14, 2007 – Christopher Parkening, Distinguished Professor of Music, was featured as a special guest on this radio program, taped in Pepperdine's Smothers Theatre on January 14, during which he presented two young guitarists for performance. The Pepperdine Center for the Arts was recognized for its quality programming and for hosting this particular segment. Click here to listen. The program also aired on KMZT 105.1 on February 11.

Hesperia Star, January 30, 2007 – Bruce Herschensohn, School of Public Policy adjunct faculty in international relations and fellow at the Davenport Institute, was featured in an article titled "Taiwan's Democracy Deserves Defending, Herschensohn Says," which describes the precarious status of Taiwanese democracy as examined by Herschensohn in his new book, Taiwan: The Threatened Democracy. Los Angeles Times, January 30, 2007 – Vance Walberg, head coach of the Pepperdine men's basketball team, was featured in an article titled "The Point Man," which describes how Walberg's high-pressure offensive, defensive attack style has garnered some loyal practitioners and earned him the reputation of being the latest up-and-coming coach to guide the Waves. Sam Lagana, assistant vice chancellor for athletics, and players Marvin Lea and Kingsley Costain were quoted. Read the article.

Financial Express, January 29, 2007 – The Pepperdine School of Law Geoffrey H. Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law was featured in an article section titled "Gets Social Entrepreneur Award in U.S. Feb. 3," which announces the selection of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus by the Palmer Center as the recipient of the first Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Janet Kerr, professor of law and executive director of the Palmer Center, Melanie Howard, director of the Palmer Center and associate director of the Pepperdine School of Law Institute on Law, Religion, and Ethics, and Kimberly Rhetts, program director for the Palmer Center, were mentioned for presenting the award to Yunus in Bangladesh. Register, January 29, 2007 – Gary Galles, professor of economics, wrote an op-ed titled "Thomas Paine Scripted the Revolution," which celebrates the influential English writer Thomas Paine on the 271st anniversary of his birth. La Presse (Montreal), January 27, 2007 – Robert E. Williams, associate professor of political science, was quoted in a French-language article titled “Le dictateur de Malibu,” which discusses the purchase of a Malibu estate by the son of Equatorial Guinea’s dictator. Read the article.

Tidings, January 26, 2007 – Doug Kmiec, Caruso Family Chair in Constitutional Law, wrote an op-ed titled "Time to Face the Error of Iraq," which describes the arguments in favor of invading Iraq in 2003, contends that those justifications were illusory, and argues that the time for American troops to leave Iraq is now.
