Pepperdine to Celebrate Tennis Championship at the Waves Club Dinner
May 26, 2006 - The NCAA National Championship Waves men's tennis team will be honored at the Waves Club Recognition Dinner on Monday, June 12, 2006 at the Warner Center Marriott. Led by four seniors, the Waves Tennis Team became the first University with under 3,000 undergraduates to claim college tennis' most celebrated team prize, the NCAA championship trophy. In over 50 years, Pepperdine is only the 7th school to earn the title and the first non-football playing school with an undergraduate enrollment of under 3,000 to accomplish the feat. It is the ninth NCAA Division I National Championship for Pepperdine and the first for men's tennis.
Coach Adam Steinberg will be one of the evening’s key note speakers. Guests will also hear from Athletics Director John Watson, new men's basketball coach Vance Walberg, Alumnus Bob Ctvrtlik (Vice President of the USOC and member of the International Olympic Committee). Al Duer Awards, for financial dedication to further the Waves Athletic Program, will be presented to Dee & Hank Stickney, managing partners of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and Lewana & John Pirozzi, Malibu residents. Additionally, the 1985 Pepperdine men's volleyball team will be on hand to receive their commemorative NCAA Championship rings.
The annual affair brings together friends of the Pepperdine Athletics program, coaches from each of the Waves 15 NCAA Division I teams, and University administration to celebrate the academic year accomplishments in sports and to recognize key members of the Waves family. The evening will begin at the Warner Center Marriott poolside at 5:30 p.m. (PDT) with a reception -- an informal opportunity to visit with coaches and other Waves Club members. Background music will be provided by the Waves Rockin' Jazz Band. Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom followed by the evening program.
The Waves Club Recognition Dinner has been held each spring for the past three years and has sold out. The dinner serves as a fundraiser for the University Athletics Department, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting student-athlete scholarships and team operations. Reservations at $125.00 per person should be made as soon as possible in an effort to accommodate as many friends.
