Planet Aid Donation Bins Find a Home at Pepperdine
The Pepperdine Housing and Community Living office placed 11 yellow bins around the Malibu campus in the last weeks of school to collect clothing and shoes for Planet Aid, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environment and creating sustainable development in Africa and Asia. In the first five days that the collection bins were in place, a total of 7,725 pounds of clothing and shoes were donated.
"Housing and Community Living believes in providing our residents an opportunity to give some of their belongings to organizations at the end of the year," said Director of Housing Jim Brock. "We are thrilled that our donations are helping to improve the lives of people in developing countries while helping our environment."
Prior to working through Planet Aid, Pepperdine provided its own program for collecting clothing at check-out called "GIVE." The program was student-run and end-of-the-year scheduling conflicts made it difficult to be continued.
Planet Aid allows Pepperdine to maintain the program year round. Currently, there are six bins located at the Lovernich, Drescher, and George Page Apartments, Rockwell Towers, in front of the HAWC, and at Pier 18. They may be used by faculty, staff, and students who wish to donate.
Clothing-related items donated to Planet Aid are resold and proceeds are used to support education, community, development, and HIV/AIDS programs in Africa and Asia.
