School of Law Moot Court Team Takes Gold in Hong Kong
Pepperdine law students became international champions last week by winning the prestigious Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong.
Teams from 46 law schools, representing 14 countries on 5 continents, competed in four preliminary rounds. Pepperdine's team was comprised of Dan Bane, Jeralin Cardoso, Ted Holmquist, and Lauren Skophammer, along with their coach, '06 graduate Kelly Craven. Longtime friend of Pepperdine, the Honorable Ronald S.W. Lew, of the Central District of the Federal District Court, in Los Angeles, CA, also accompanied the team.
Pepperdine's team advanced through the preliminary rounds, making the cut to the quarterfinal or "Elite Eight." In the quarters, the team defeated NYU, before defeating a team from India in the semifinals. In the final round, Pepperdine battled the University of Monash from Australia in competition for first place. At the conclusion of the awards luncheon on Sunday afternoon, Pepperdine was announced the winning team.
Faculty advisor for Pepperdine's moot court program, Professor Nancy McGinnis, says the win is wonderful but not surprising. "I chose exceptional advocates for the team, and they proceeded to immerse themselves in international commercial arbitration," she says.
"From their written submissions to their oral advocacy skills, this team is remarkably strong. We're pleased to have prevailed in the final round," says Professor McGinnis.
Since 1972, Pepperdine Law School has had a developed advocacy program competing at the highest levels. This important, time honored law school tradition, allows students to hone advocacy and public speaking skills while participating in mock appellate proceedings. By participating in realistic appellate, trial and dispute resolution proceedings, "Mooters" put their advocacy skills to the test by competing against other law students from the United States and from around the world.
A reception to honor the champions of the Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot will be held in the atrium on Tuesday, March 27, at 2:30 p.m.
