Women's Volleyball Competes in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Pepperdine Women's Volleyball Team

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament, and will play host University Southern California (USC) in the first round on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Trojan’s Galen Center in Los Angeles.

The Waves, who finished the regular season at 18-10, will make the short drive to Los Angeles to face the Trojans in a rematch of the September 5 match earlier this season that the Trojans claimed, 3-0. The winner will face the victor of the University Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) (24-5) vs. Long Beach State (25-6) match on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. The Trojans will webcast each match for free on usctrojans.com.

“Now we’re at 0-0,” Pepperdine Coach Nina Matthies said. “Now is the time to see if we can put everything together. That’s our goal.”

In the match earlier this season with the Trojans, Lecca Roberts (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury HS) had 12 kills and hit .750 for the match, while Rachel Lumsden (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) notched a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. The Trojans’ Asia Kaczor recorded 20 kills and nine digs to lead the Trojans, as they posted the 3-0 sweep.

“I think that we’re going to look at things from that match, and do some things different on our end to make ourselves successful,” Matthies said. “It’s about playing to our strenghths.”
