Pepperdine Hosts Family Weekend
Pepperdine University will host Family Weekend from Friday, Oct. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 14, on the Malibu campus. During this annual Pepperdine tradition, students and their families have the opportunity to visit and participate in events that provide a glimpse into student life at Seaver College.
Events at Family Weekend include the President's Open House, a reception on Friday hosted by President Andrew K. Benton and his wife Debby at their home, the Brock House. Later that evening, the Blue and Orange Madness celebration kicks off the 2007-08 NCAA basketball season at the most well-attended student event of the year. This annual event begins at 7 p.m. with carnival-like activities at Madness Village in the Firestone Fieldhouse parking lot.
Throughout the weekend, families can share the academic experience through the faculty lecture series with presentations by Dan Caldwell, Distinguished Professor of Political Science; Chris Heard, associate professor of religion; and Cooker Perkins, assistant professor of sports medicine.
Visitors may also see performances in Pepperdine's Smothers Theatre, visit classes, tour the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, attend professor open houses, take a nature hike, or participate in a Family Feud competition.
Seaver College dean David Baird will update Family Weekend visitors on current Seaver happenings on Saturday in the Rockwell Academic Center Plaza. Sara Young-Jackson, director of the Seaver Parents Program, will discuss additional ways families can get involved with the University.
Waves athletes will hit the field for home competitions this weekend as women's volleyball takes on San Francisco and women's soccer competes against cross-town rival Loyola Marymount. On Saturday, the men's and women's cross country teams will host the Kampmann Klassic, a 5k race is in honor of former Pepperdine head coach Dick Kampmann. Family Weekend guests are welcome to attend all athletic events.
