Men's Volleyball Headed to National Championships

The Pepperdine men's volleyball team has earned the #2 seed at this week's NCAA Championships and will meet MPSF rival Long Beach State in the national semifinals Thursday, May 1. The Waves (16-10) will play the third-seeded 49ers (23-6) at approximately 8 p.m. at the UC Irvine Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif. The match will be televised by ESPN2.

Waves fans can purchase tickets through the Pepperdine Ticket Office (866-WAVE-TIX) until 10 a.m. on Wednesday (April 30). All-session passes are $25 for adults and $18 for youth. Single-session passes are $15 for adults and $10 for youth.

This is Pepperdine's 15th appearance at the NCAA Championships and the sixth since the 2000 season. The Waves have won five national championships (1978, 1985, 1986, 1992, 2005), second-most among all NCAA schools. The Waves were the #5 seed for the MPSF Tournament but went on the road to upset fourth-seeded UCLA and top-seeded Long Beach State before defeating second-seeded BYU in a dramatic five-game tournament finale on Saturday night in Long Beach.

The Waves defeated the 49ers in two of three meetings this season. Long Beach State was the MPSF regular-season champion and earned the lone at-large bid to the four-team NCAA Championships. This will be the first meeting between the two schools at the NCAA Championships.

The first national semifinal features top-seeded Penn State (28-1) against fourth-seeded Ohio State (20-7) at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The championship is on Saturday (May 3) at 4 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.
