Pepperdine Tennis Teams Win WCC Crowns

Both the Pepperdine women and men's tennis teams recently won West Coast Conference (WCC) championships. The No. 18 women's tennis team captured its sixth consecutive WCC crown and 20th in Pepperdine history with a 4-0 sweep over Saint Mary's in the finals of the WCC tournament on Sunday, Apr. 20. With a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's in the WCC finals on the same day, the men's tennis team won its 39th WCC Championship. The Waves brought home the WCC trophy for the 18th year in a row.

The women's tennis team (19-4) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with the win. "We came out and wanted to make a statement today, and we did a good job of that," assistant coach Scott Doerner said. "The doubles match was tough, but we were able to pull that out, which was key, and we continued that momentum into the singles matches. We came to win and it was good because we always expect to win the WCC."

"Winning never gets old," added Pepperdine men's tennis head coach Adam Steinberg, who notched his sixth WCC Championship. "This was the best WCC final I've seen a Pepperdine team play since I've been coach." Clinching the championship on the No.1 court was No. 9 Andre Begemann, who handily defeated Kusnierz (Saint Mary's) 6-3, 6-3. The team will play the first round of the NCAA Championships May 9 through 11 at a location to be determined.
