Pepperdine Named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Pepperdine University was recently named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for 2010 by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development. Pepperdine was named to the Honor Roll with Distinction.

The annual recognition program celebrates exemplary commitment to service and volunteering from institutions of higher education and pays tribute to the work of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who support local communities through service. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

“Pepperdine University’s inclusion on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is an affirmation of our core values,” said Pepperdine President Andrew K. Benton. “The University’s mission underscores our commitment to ‘strengthening lives for purpose, service, and leadership.’ Receiving recognition for living up to our mission is something the entire Pepperdine community can celebrate.”

Pepperdine has amped up its commitment to service in recent years under Benton’s leadership, particularly with the founding of the Waves of Service movement, which celebrates, supports, and connects Pepperdine alumni committed to volunteerism and careers of service worldwide. The vision of Waves of Service is to become the world's most active alumni service movement.

Current students also contribute to Pepperdine’s vision of service through volunteer efforts hosted by the graduate schools and the Pepperdine Volunteer Center, including long-term commitments to local community needs as well as special events such as Step Forward Day and the spring break group efforts of Project Serve.
