Waves Men’s Volleyball Opens 2012 Season

Waves men's volleyball opened the 2012 season last weekend with a pair of matches versus Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association rival and #13-ranked Lewis University Flyers on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7 and 8. The 2012 schedule features six home nonconference contests in addition to the challenging Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) lineup. The Waves were 11-15 overall in 2011 and 7-17 in the MPSF to finish in ninth place.

Despite double-digit kill performances from senior Chase Ross and freshman Josh Taylor, the #9 Pepperdine men's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Lewis in the season opener. The Waves avenged the loss on Sunday and won by set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11.

The Waves open MPSF play this week when they host Cal State Northridge Wednesday, Jan. 11, and Long Beach State Friday, Jan. 14. The team was chosen to finish eighth in the 2012 MPSF standings in early December in a preseason vote by the league's coaches and received 68 points in this year's poll.

The Waves conclude the month of January on the road, when they take on Hawaii (Jan. 20-21), UC Irvine (Jan. 25), and UC San Diego (Jan. 27).

February brings UCLA (Feb. 1), UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 3), and Cal Baptist (Feb. 15) to Malibu, while the Waves pay visits to USC (Feb. 10), Stanford (Feb. 25), and Pacific (Feb. 25).

Ten matches keeps Pepperdine busy in March. Home matches include Penn State (March 8), USC (March 12), Harvard (March 12), George Mason (March 24), Stanford (March 29), and Pacific (March 31).

The final home matches of the regular season are scheduled for April 5 and April 7 versus UCI and UCSD, respectively. The Waves bring the 2012 campaign full circle on April 12 and 14 when they make the return trips to CSUN and Long Beach State.

Postseason runs April 21, 26, and 28 with the MPSF Tournament and concludes May 3 and 5 when the top four programs in the country battle it out at the NCAA Championship.

All 17 home contests will be broadcast live and for free via WaveCasts, which is available on the Pepperdine Athletics Web site.
