Pepperdine Athletics Shows Strong in Collegiate Power Rankings
In a study released October 3 by NCSA Athletic Recruiting, Pepperdine University fared extremely well, ranking second among Division I schools on the West Coast. The Collegiate Power Rankings study takes into account athletic postseason success, academic rankings and student-athlete graduation rates.
This is the 10th year that NCSA Athletic Recruiting has put together its Collegiate Power Rankings. According to its news release, the ratings "are calculated by averaging student-athlete graduation rates, academic rankings provided by U.S. News & World Report and the strength of athletic departments as determined by the Learfield Sports Director's Cup."
Of the West Coast Division I schools on the list, Pepperdine only trailed Stanford. The Waves were 26th among all Division I schools and 52nd overall (including Division II and III schools).
The Waves are coming off a banner 2011-12 season, as the University won the inaugural national championship in women's sand volleyball while six teams won a total of seven conference championships. For the third time in school history, Pepperdine claimed the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports trophy, which is awarded to the Division I school without football that has the most postseason success over the course of the school year. In addition to finishing first among I-AAA schools, the Waves were 64th overall in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup.
In the most recent U.S. News & World Report study released this fall, Pepperdine was #54 in the national university rankings.
In October 2011, the last time the NCAA put out Graduation Success Rate data, 13 of the Waves' 14 programs had averages better than the national rate and seven teams (men's cross country, men's tennis, men's volleyball, women's cross country/track, women's golf, women's soccer, and women's tennis) received perfect scores. Pepperdine's overall GSR was 91 percent, a figure that ranked best among all Division I schools in Southern California.
