Conference Invitation

11 January 2005

Dear SCRC Colleagues:

It is my great pleasure to invite you to attend “Exploring the Renaissance 2005: An International Conference” this March 3-5. The event is sponsored by the South-Central Renaissance Conference and is hosted by Pepperdine University. Other constituent organizations supporting the conference include the Queen Elizabeth I Society, the Andrew Marvell Society, the Renaissance Art Society, and the Early Modern Women Society. The Renaissance Conference of Southern California is jointly sponsoring the program on Saturday.

Conference events will transpire in two extraordinary venues: March 3 and 4 in Malibu at Pepperdine University’s Villa Graziadio Executive Center, on the new Drescher Graduate Campus, nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean; and March 5 in San Marino at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. A great array of presentations, organized by Program Chair Norman Land, will be offered during the event. Professor Andrew Ladis, the Franklin Professor of Art History at the University of Georgia, will present the Hunter Lecture Thursday afternoon; and John A. Marino, Professor of Early Modern European History at the University of California-San Diego, will deliver the plenary address at the Huntington on Saturday. In addition to stimulating lectures, participants will enjoy receptions on patios overlooking the Pacific and dining in Santa Monica on the colorful Third Street Promenade. Participants will also be treated to a concert by the award-winning Concord Ensemble, vocal musicians dedicated to early music, in Pepperdine’s beautiful Stauffer Chapel. In addition, for those interested, tours of the Huntington and the Getty will be offered. For these and many other reasons we expect this year’s conference to be extraordinary.

We urge you to register soon. On-line registration will be available in just a few days. (See attached information.) On-line registration may be handled by going to: or by visiting the SCRC website. Conference registration is $125 if completed by February 15. After February 15, the cost is $145. (Student registration fees are $90 before Feb. 15, and $110 after.) The registration fee covers the cost of receptions, the Friday luncheon, the Saturday luncheon, the Concord Ensemble concert, and shuttles to main conference events. Optional trips to the J. Paul Getty Museum and to the Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade will be $10 each. Registration materials, in paper form, will be mailed in early February. Attendees and participants alike must be current members of SCRC. Be sure to include your 2005 membership fees with your conference registration.

We are offering two convention hotels. Limited space is available on campus at Villa Graziadio ($149 plus tax per night). To reserve a room, call 310-506-1101. The other convention hotel will be the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. Call 818-887-4800. To receive the conference rate of $89 (plus tax) per night, be sure to mention “Pepperdine Renaissance Conference.” Reservations should be made no later than Monday, February 7, at either location. For those with their own transportation, go to for additional hotel options.

Shuttles will run periodically between the Marriott and Pepperdine, and between the Marriott, Pepperdine, and the Huntington on Saturday. Los Angeles is large and very much a city of the automobile. For maximum convenience, consider renting a car (or sharing one with a colleague). For transportation from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Pepperdine, several options are available. Go to . For shuttles between LAX and the Warner Center Marriott, the hotel recommends SuperShuttle (818-556-6600).

If you have additional questions regarding the conference, please feel free to contact Jennifer Adkison () or call 310-506-4261.

Southern California offers its own special kind of “Southern” hospitality. We look forward to seeing you in Malibu in March for a great Renaissance feast!

Yours truly,
