ROUTE 66 IN THE ARTS

  • The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck. Published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows the Joad family as they travel Route 66 from Oklahoma to the promised land of the 1930s California. Made into an Oscar-winning film in 1940 staring Henry Fonda, the novel raised awareness about the exploitation of working people in the Great Depression.
  • Cars (2006). Directed by John Lassiter and Joe Ranft, this Disney-Pixar collaboration was originally going to be called Route 66, until it was changed to avoid confusion with the 1960s television show of the same name. The story follows racing car Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), who finds himself unable to leave the tumbleweed town of Radiator Springs, which became a town in decline when Route 66, going right past the town, was bypassed. The film also incorporates many iconic Route 66 images, such as the Wigwam Motels, the U-Drop Inn, and Cadillac Ranch.
