"On Guard! (An Introduction to the Critical Analysis of Public Persuasion)" with Gary Selby, Professor of Communication
What do a political campaign ad, Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech, Pepperdine University's "Heroes Garden," and the apocalyptic visions of the end time in the Book of Revelation have in common? The answer? They all illustrate the incredible power of words and images to move us, to shape our perceptions, beliefs, and actions. They are rhetorical. This class will introduce participants to "rhetorical criticism," the practice of critically analyzing rhetorical messages. We will explore some of the basic tools that rhetorical scholars use to unpack public discourse and we will sharpen our skills as critical consumers of rhetoric.

It is no surprise that we live in a pluralistic world. Nevertheless, such a world gives rise to important human questions. In this lecture/discussion, Joi and Raymond Carr will address how the question of vocation enhances the question of what it means to be human, who is often overlooked in this discussion, and what it means in terms of modern freedom--one of our familiar buzzwords today.
