Waves Weekend 2012 promises to be an action-packed weekend with fun for the whole family.  The list of events is growing by the day, so keep checking back, and feel free to send us your ideas, hopes, and feedback for the best Waves Weekend yet!

Online registration is now closed, but onsite registration is available on Friday (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and Saturday (8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) at our Check In location on the Philips Plaza Terrace.

Please note that your Waves Weekend package includes the Eric Hutchinson concert as well as some great events listed below at no additional charge! When registering please be sure to RSVP to each event you plan to attend.

  • Check In: 10:00am-4:00pm at Philips Plaza Terrace

       Pick up your name tag, event tickets and official Waves Weekend schedule and get ready for a fantastic weekend!

  • Celebration Chapel: 10:00am- 11:00am at Stauffer Chapel

     A student-led devotional and time of worship, Celebration Chapel is a great opportunity for fellowship and praise!

  • Frederick R. Weisman Museum: Pop Culture 10am-4pm

     Pop Art first arose in the early 1960's when artists began to draw inspiration from the new mass media that was transforming our lives. This exhibition explores the roots of this movement as well as the way subsequent generations of artists have drawn inspiration from popular culture.

  • Adamson House Tour 11a.m.- 12p.m.

     Explore the classic Southern California architecture of this home that sits on one of the most beautiful beaches in the state. The Adamnson House was, for a time, home to Pepperdine President Norvel Young and his family. Shuttles are available in the main lot. Limited space available.

  • Malibu Walking Food Tour (Families Only) 1-3pm Malibu Area

     Join Gourmet LA Food Tours for a culinary walking tour of Malibu. You will enjoy food tastings at local favorites and specialty restaurants, which will all add up to more than a full meal! Your Gourmet LA guide will share with you the rich history of Malibu and help you explore some of the exclusive shops and boutiques. The cost is $55 per person.   • Faculty Lecture Series 3-3:45pm Plaza Classroom 190

"On Guard! (An Introduction to the Critical Analysis of Public Persuasion)" with Gary Selby, Professor of Communication

       What do a political campaign ad, Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech, Pepperdine University's "Heroes Garden," and the apocalyptic visions of the end time in the Book of Revelation have in common?  The answer?  They all illustrate the incredible power of words and images to move us, to shape our perceptions, beliefs, and actions.  They are rhetorical.  This class will introduce participants to "rhetorical criticism," the practice of critically analyzing rhetorical messages.  We will explore some of the basic tools that rhetorical scholars use to unpack public discourse and we will sharpen our skills as critical consumers of rhetoric.

  • President's Open House (Seaver Families only) 4:30-6pm Brock House

     Andy & Debby Benton, president and first lady of Pepperdine, welcome Pepperdine students and their family members to Family Weekend at a casual, come-and-go reception in their home where hors d'oeuvres will be served. Shuttles will be available in the main lot.

  • Dinner on Your Own 5-7pm Tyler Campus Center

     The Waves Cafe will be open for those  who would like to dine on campus with students. You may also want to go off campus to Malibu or Santa Monica for dinner or grab food at Madness Village.

  • Madness Village 6-8pm Firestone Fieldhouse

     Come celebrate Pepperdine's biggest carnival of the year! Take part in food, family-friendly games, incredible shows, and great music.

  • Blue & Orange Madness 8:15-10pm Firestone Fieldhouse

     Help us kick off the fall sports season at this popular student event packed with school spirit! The evening will feature a variety of acts and student entertainers. A highlight of the evening will be when one student and one parent each attempt a half-court shot for a year of free tuition. Blue & Orange Madness is the kick-off of the Men's and Women's NCAA basketball seasons.

  • Waves Tennis Mixer & Lunch 8:45am-12pm Ralphs-Straus Tennis Pavilion

     Fancy your hands at an early morning racquet swing? Enjoy a morning with friends at the tennis courts and play with a different partner each round. The mixer check-in time is 8:45am and rounds go from 9-11am followed by lunch at 11:15am. Racquets available upon request, please sign up in advance as spaces are limited.

  • Devotional & Prayer Walk 9-10:25am Stauffer Chapel

     Pepperdine constantly seeks the counsel, wisdom, and guidance of God through prayer among the members of our local community. We invite parents, students, alumni and friends to join us. As Pepperdine is trusted with hundreds of students, we invite you to participate in the university's efforts to guide and educate them by joining us in prayer.  Your walk will take you around the main campus area in a contemplative time of prayer.

  • Surfing Lessons 9am-12pm Seaver Main Lot

     It's never too late to learn how to surf. Experience one of the best reasons for going to school in sunny California with surf lessons. The staff from Malibu Makos is full of great personnel that will make sure you're safe and have a great time. Surfing is available to kids as young as 4 and as old as 80! Shuttles are available in the main lot.  Advanced purchase required.

  • Child Care 10am-3pm Pendleton Learning Center, 125

     The Student Alumni Organization will provide childcare for children pre-registered between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Snacks and games will be included in the cost.  A pizza lunch is also included if your child is present at noontime.

  • For the Love of the Game: Four Decades of Olympians Discuss the Evolution of Amateur Athletics              10:00-11:30am Wilburn Auditorium

       Join past Olympians, including Pepperdine Alumni Olympians in a discussion on their involvement in the Olympics and their careers in Amateur Athletics! There will be a light breakfast buffet starting at 8:30am.


  • Brunch with the Dean (Seaver Families Only) 10:30am-12pm Rockwell Dining Center/Waves Cafe

     Enjoy brunch with other families while you have the special opportunity to hear from Rick Marrs, dean of Seaver College; Sara Young Jackson, vice chancellor; and the Concert Choir as they perform their latest selections. Advanced RSVP required.

  • Lunch on Your Own 11:30am-1pm Malibu Area

     Get out and explore the local Malibu area to fill your lunch appetites!  We recommend several restaurants close by.  Grab great Mexican food at Howdy's or stop by and see the catch of the day at Dukes.

  • Men's Water Polo vs. UC Irvine: Noon Raleigh Runnesl Memorial Pool

     Come watch our Waves in action as they play UC Irvine.  It promises to be an interesting match with your poolside seat!  Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children and seniors, and free for faculty, staff & students with their Pepperdine I.D. CLICK HERE to purchase tickets.

  • Pepperdine Improv Troupe (PIT) Comedy Performance: Noon-1:30pm Howard A. White Center

     Are you ready to laugh?  The Pepperdine Improv Troupe will be entertaining the masses at the HAWC.  PIT has been performing for the past seven years, and promises to be a hilarious addition to Waves Weekend.  Past PIT alumni will be joining this performance.

  • Class of 2002 - 10 Year Reunion (Seaver College): Noon-2pm - SOLD OUT

  • The Beacon Season Two Premiere 1:00-2:00pm Elkins Auditorium

      Pepperdine's very own situational comedy The Beacon is back for their second season on campus. A "mockumentary" about a school newspaper struggling to find its voice, the Beacon is the only 30-minute monthly sitcom on a college campus in the country. Be sure to RSVP for and stay for "The Next Wave in Entertainment" following the premiere!

  • Women's Strategies for Success 1:30-2:30pm Wilburn Auditorium. Reception immediately following the panel discussion

How do successful women meet challenges? Let's find out together! Work-life balance is essential for women, as well as men and families.  Ongoing research at Pepperdine's Graduate School of Education and Psychology, led by Dean Margaret J. Weber, looks for answers by interviewing women. Learn from women's personal stories and find out how you can share your story, too. Kerri Cissna-Heath, Doctoral Candidate and Pepperdine Associate Director of Housing and Student Life, moderates a lively panel of  Pepperdine women on Women's Strategies for Success.   • Women's Volleyball vs. Santa Clara University 1pm Firestone Fieldhouse

     Waves Fans - come support your Women's Volleyball team as they take on conference rival Santa Clara. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children and seniors, and free for faculty, staff & students with their Pepperdine I.D.      Join the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon as they recognize their scholarship winner(s) and come together in fellowship.

     Take a hike amid Malibu's scenic beauty with Dr. Rodney Honeycutt, professor of biology, who will point out the interesting flora and fauna. Shuttles will be available in the main lot. RSVP Required.

     Join your fellow PAC Alumni for fellowship and a reception in your honor

  • Admission Information Session 2-2:30pm Stauffer Chapel

     This information session is hosted by the Seaver College Office of Admission.  It will be led by the Associate Director of Admission who will provide in-depth information regarding student life at Pepperdine and our admission process.  The information session will also provide a brief overview of financial assistance, and there will be a short question/answer period following the presentation.

"Faith and Vocation in a Pluralistic World"

with Joi Carr, Assistant Professor of English and Film Studies and Raymond Carr, Assistant Professor of Theology and Ethics

      It is no surprise that we live in a pluralistic world.  Nevertheless, such a world gives rise to important human questions.  In this lecture/discussion, Joi and Raymond Carr will address how the question of vocation enhances the question of what it means to be human, who is often overlooked in this discussion, and what it means in terms of modern freedom--one of our familiar buzzwords today.  Hopefully, the audience will leave with a better appreciation of Pepperdine's commitment to this valuable discourse.

  • Cardio Kickboxing 2-3pm Harilela International Stadium

     Experience a special fitness class sponsored by Campus Recreation just for Waves Weekend. Kick, punch and sweat your way fit with this high-energy class while grooving to upbeat and popular music! Utilizing traditional kickboxing moves and combinations, participants can expect a total body workout. Bring water, wear comfortable clothes, and expect to sweat!

  • The Next Wave in Entertainment, Media, and Culture 2:00-4:00pm Elkins Auditorium

      Celebrate Waves in Entertainment featuring Fox News correspondent Adam Housley '94, William Morris Endeavor agent, Cliff Roberts, SC '95, and honoring George Schlatter, GPC '49, creator of Laugh-In, Real People, and The American Comedy Awards. As executive producer of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In,Schlatter launched the careers of Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, and countless comedians, but his culture changing entertainment started in theater at Pepperdine.   • Faculty Lecture Series 3-3:45pm Plaza Classroom 190

"Engaging Students in Community-Based Research" with Dr. Regan Schaffer, Associate Professor of Management

     CBR is collaborative, change-oriented research that engages faculty, students and community members in projects that address a community-identified need. This lecture will highlight the innovative work that students produced in partnership with two local nonprofit partners to address their communication and marketing challenges and showcase the creative strategies produced.

  • Bernie James Sextet 3-4pm Amphitheater

        Jazz flugelhornist and law professor Bernie James performs with a professional jazz ensemble of students and alumni representing Seaver College, the School of Law, and GSBM.   The hour set of music presents the jazz history timeline of the classic repertoire and current smooth jazz tunes.

  • Grandparents Reception (Seaver Families Only) 4-5pm Frederick R. Weisman Museum

    Grandparents are invited to bring their students and family members to an exciting presentation about Seaver College designed just for them. Entertainment will be provided by Seaver College students and representatives from the Grandparents Program will highlight important ways that grandparents can get involved and support their grandchild's experience at Pepperdine. Following the Grandparents Reception, all participants will be escorted to the Waves Weekend Festival and Concert, where they can enjoy the evening in a special designated area for Grandparents and their family

    Family fun, food trucks with food for purchase, Spirit Cup Lip Sync, Waves of Service Leader Fair, Pepperdine Fund Challenge, and award presentations. Please note: Food available for additional purchase (cash only).

  • Waves Weekend Concert: 5:20-8pm Alumni Park ,

    Singer songwriter Eric Hutchinson will perform with opening artist, Pepperdine Alumnus, Cazz Brindis ('10)                         

  • Young Alumni Reception (Seaver College classes of 2002-2012): 9:30pm-12am The Malibu Inn

    Classes of 2008 – 2012 reunite at The Malibu Inn after the Waves Weekend Concert.  Enjoy appetizers and come meet up with friends and recent grads.

     Join the members of University Church for worship and finish off your weekend with praise and celebration.   If you ever attended University Church we would especially love for you to celebrate your Sunday here with us!

  • Waves Weekend Athletics Tailgate Noon-1pm Parking Lot N (Upper Baseball Field Lot)

     Come celebrate and get ready to cheer on Pepperdine Athletics at this tailgate. All are welcome! The first 300 fans will get a special edition Waves Weekend foam finger and the first 150 fans will get free food! Then grab a voucher to get into the Men's Water Polo or Women's Soccer game for free!
