Assistive Technology

There are many and various assistive technology options for students who are looking for support. From apps for studying to text-to-speech software, these tools can make a huge difference in the academic experience of students. The list below is not comprehensive nor does Pepperdine make any representation or guarantees about the technology referenced below, but it does provide some options for students looking for support. Note that the resources below are based on a list generated by Augsburg College; see their website for more options.

Built-in Accessibility

Windows

Laptop computers are equipped with accessible technology. Some exams of features are:

Reading

Bookshare

Bookshare is a powerful tool that can assist students by providing accommodations for visual, physical, and learning disabilities. Visit their website for information on their collection of titles. 

For students who have access to alternative texts as an accommodation with the Office of Student Accessibility, please contact the Administrative Services Coordinator to obtain access to these texts and see the Bookshare page on mobile reading tools for increased access to screen readers and applications.

  • Cometdocs PDF Converter converts documents in to a format that you can run through a screen reader.

  • Fleksy customizes keyboards to increase text size and word prediction.  
  • eType is a grammar assistant and word prediction software. 

Mac

  • Voice Dream Writer is an app that assists in grammar, organization, and also has text-to-speech and speech-to-text features. 
  • Typ-O HD uses word prediction and text-tospeech and speech-to-text feautres to assist in writing. 
  • Fleksy customizes keyboards to increase text size and word prediction.

  • Ghotit is a phonetic spell-checker and grammar checker. 

Chrome Extensions

  • Co:Writer is a word prediction app with text-to-speech function.

  • AudioNote assists students in sychronizing lecture notes with an audio recording. 
  • WritePad is an app that converts notes written onto a mobile device into typed text. 
  • Evernote provides a place to organize notes, integrate with media like images, and work with others. 
  • Microsoft OneNote is a a Microsoft Office program that allows students to organize notes. 
  • iAnnotate allows students to annotate various file types and export them in compatible formats.

  • Notability allows students to integrate notes with pictures and audio recording. 
  • SoundNote is an app that will sync typed notes with an audio recording.  
  • AudioNote allows students to synchronize written notes with an audio recording. 
  • WritePad is an app that converts notes written onto a mobile device into typed text.
  • Evernote provides a place to organize notes, integrate with media like images, and work with others.
  • Penultimate allows students to sketch or draw notes on an app that will sync with Evernote.
