Caruso School of Law Partners with Los Angeles County Amid United Against Hate Week 2021


LA vs HateFrom November 14 through November 2021, the Caruso School of Law will partner with Los Angeles County for LA vs Hate, a community-centered program designed to support all residents of Los Angeles County who are united against hate. Led by the Human Relations Commission, LA vs Hate partners with other community partners from all five county districts, representing a diverse coalition of voices committed to ending hate. The week will feature workshops, community building for schools and businesses, and panelists addressing what a hate-free Los Angeles county could look like. 

Caruso Law is sponsoring the workshop on Thursday, November 18, 2021. The two-part workshop will explore how the public can leverage the power of arts and culture to envision an equitable future, and how these strategies can be implemented at scale to build an inclusive community. Throughout the event, policymakers and advocates will discuss concrete actions that can be taken today in order to make this vision a reality. 

Alumnae Capri Maddox (JD’ 01) and Rachel Rossi (JD’ 09) will participate as featured panelists at events throughout the week. Maddox is the executive director of the City of Los Angeles Civil Rights and Human Relations and Equity Department. Rossi is deputy associate attorney general and the anti-hate coordinator at the United States Department of Justice. 

The mission of United Against Hate Week is to gather leaders, thinkers, activists, and community participants to envision a future in Los Angeles County without hate, with the goal  to address the normalization of hate and inspire people to stand up to it. The week is also intended to support individuals and communities as they heal from the trauma of hate. Additionally, According to the event’s website, “LA vs Hate United Against Hate Week was created in direct response to the rise in hate crimes and bias incidents that pose a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods.”
