Office of the Chaplain

Office of the Chaplain Staff 2018

Welcome

The Office of the Chaplain is dedicated to cultivating a spiritually formative environment for the Pepperdine community through Christian practices that involve us in God's activity in the world. We hope to cultivate space for people to draw near to God through worship, prayer, Bible study, and Sabbath rest. Below are the primary programs we use to cultivate a spiritually formative environment for students at Pepperdine:

Worship
At Pepperdine, we believe that communal worship fundamentally shapes who we are and how we engage with God's activity in the world. Gathering as a community to rejoice, proclaim, reconcile and lament is integral to our identity in the Triune God. The Office of the Chaplain hosts weekly gatherings of worship for faculty, staff and students on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. in the Firestone Fieldhouse and on Friday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. in the Malibu campus amphitheater. In addition to regular worship gatherings, the Office of the Chaplain hosts an annual prayer service to begin the academic year, services marking holidays of the church calendar and various prayer services throughout the year.

Spiritual Mentorship
The Office of the Chaplain is committed to fostering an environment of spiritual mentoring for faculty, staff and students of Pepperdine University. It is our conviction that spiritual formation best occurs in the context of deep community. Spiritual mentoring is a relationship between mentor, mentee and the Holy Spirit. Through this relationship, mentees seek to discover what God is doing in the world, already doing in their lives and thereby grow in deep intimacy with God. The Office of the Chaplain provides training for staff and faculty members who desire to be spiritual mentors and matches students who desire spiritual mentoring with those mentors.

Pastoral Care
In the Office of the Chaplain, our three chaplains are available year-round for prayer, confidential pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, exploration of scripture, and support for spiritual struggle.

Faith Resources
From a wide variety of books and devotionals for guided learning, to experienced preachers and teachers, the Office of the Chaplain offers faith resources available to support the Pepperdine community.
