This is the first retrospective exhibition of Carolyn Mary Kleefeld, a poet and artist who left Los Angeles in 1981 and moved to Big Sur. Nurtured and inspired by the region's beauty and solitude, she embarked on a journey of personal artistic discovery. A visionary pioneer, she developed her own brand of lyrical language, using metaphors, archetypes, and symbolic images to explore the psychology and spiritual promise of human beings. Her joyous art draws upon diverse currents ranging from Action Painting to Surrealist Fantasy and celebrates the wondrous capacity of the human spirit to experience, dream, and imagine.
Robert Dowd (1936-1995) was an American artist best known for his imaginative, whimsical paintings of money and stamps. In 1961 he moved to Los Angeles and began to create his currency paintings. These enlargements of U.S. paper currency were large-scale—some 10 feet wide. They often had humorous alterations, such as substituting portraits of famous artists for the presidents. In 1962 his work was included in a groundbreaking exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum, considered to be the first museum show of Pop Art. Despite the success of these paintings, the FBI accused him of counterfeiting and by 1970 he had shifted his attention to paintings exploring scientific atomic theory. This exhibition is the first in-depth examination of the currency paintings and related work by this seminal Los Angeles modernist.

This exhibition, the fourth on the theme since 1999, marks the 100th anniversary of the California Art Club, an organization founded in 1909 by the original California Impressionists. Today the group is dedicated to maintaining the values of traditional landscape painting. They emphasize the function of the artist as one who interprets and records our increasingly changing world. For this exhibition, California Art Club artists have come to Malibu to record their impressions of this picturesque region. Their landscapes capture the beauty and complexity of the community, ranging from the Pacific Coast Highway to the majestic mountains and pristine beaches. The exhibition reflects changes in Malibu since the fall 2007 wildfires and provides a message of hope and renewal.
Works are on view in the Gregg G. Juarez Gallery, Ron Wilson-Designer Gallery, and West Gallery in the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art. Funding is provided by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. Exhibitions and dates are subject to change.
