Graduate School of Education and Psychology Celebrates 2015 Graduation


The Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University will host commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 16, at Alumni Park on the Malibu campus. The psychology division ceremony will take place at 10 AM, followed by the education division ceremony at 2:30 PM.

Terry Hargrave, a professor of marriage and family therapy at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., and president and practicing therapist at Amarillo Family Institute, will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Psychology degree at the psychology division ceremony. Barry Munitz, Trustee Professor of California State University, Los Angeles, and president of the Cotsen Family Foundations, will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the education division ceremony.

Hargrave is nationally recognized for his pioneering work with intergenerational families and has authored numerous professional articles and 11 books, including Restoration Therapy: Understanding and Guiding Healing in Marriage and Family Therapy and The Essential Humility of Marriage: Honoring the Third Identity in Couple Therapy.

Hargrave has presented nationally and internationally on the concepts and processes of family and marriage restoration, aging, and is known for his clear and entertaining presentations. His work has been featured in several national magazines and newspapers, as well as ABC News, 20/20, Good Morning America, and CBS Early Morning.

He has been selected as a national conference plenary speaker and as a Master’s Series Therapist by the American Association for Marriage and family Therapy. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy and Marriage and Family: A Christian Journal and has also published articles in the Journal of Family Therapy, Journal of the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the Journal of Psychology and Christianity, and the Journal of Professional Counseling.

Hargrave is a member of the American Counseling Association and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Prior to his career at Fuller, he had 19 years of teaching experience at the University of Mississippi, Amarillo College, and West Texas A&M University and over 20 years of experience counseling couples, families, and individuals. His wife, Sharon, is the director of the Boone Center for the Family at Pepperdine.

Barry Munitz, Trustee Professor of California State University, Los Angeles, and president of the Cotsen Family Foundations, will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the education division ceremony.

Munitz is the founding chair of California’s P-16 Council, a group of education, business, and community leaders charged with developing strategies to improve education for preschool through college. Munitz also chairs the President’s Advisory Committee of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and led the board of trustees of Sierra Nevada College. He is chancellor emeritus of the 23-campus California State University, the country’s largest senior system of public higher education. Munitz was also chancellor of the University of Houston, and academic vice president of the University of Illinois system.

Munitz has served previously as president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, the wealthiest art institution in the world, which oversees the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, the Getty Foundation, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Conservation Institute.

Munitz is a governor of the Broad Family Foundations, a corporate director at Sallie Mae, chairs the Prospect Global Resources Board, is a former chair of the American Council of Education Board, and has served on the Princeton University Board of Trustees.

Munitz earned a B.A. degree in classics and comparative literature at Brooklyn College. He earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in comparative literature from Princeton University.
