Pepperdine Theatre Department to Present The Winter's Tale
From April 6 through April 9, 2022, the Pepperdine Theatre Department at Seaver College will present William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale in Smothers Theatre on the Malibu campus. Directed by Hollace Starr, associate professor of theatre at Seaver College, the production follows the story of the jealous King Leontes and is just one of many beloved Shakespeare productions.
“The play is timely and goes to some very dark places,” Starr says. “But fortunately the play offers some relief halfway through and becomes a comedy! It’s truly remarkable how, once you adjust to Shakespeare’s language (which is beautiful), just how contemporary and modern these characters and situations are.”
Leontes, overcome with rage after accusing Queen Hermione of infidelity, sets out to isolate himself from those closest to him. The cast of Seaver College students powerfully captures and sheds light on the damaging effects of isolation and the power of time in facilitating hope and forgiveness. Following the April 6 performance, the cast and director will join the audience for a special talk back.
