Political Science Professor Robert Williams to Examine the Ethics of War

Robert Williams - Pepperdine UniversityRobert Williams, professor of political science and dean of the Social Sciences Division at Seaver College, will present “Lessons in Stone: World War I Memorials and the Construction of Moral Meaning” in the Surfboard Room at Payson Library on Monday, November 11, at 4 PM.

In the 101 years since World War I ended on November 11, 1918, nation-states and local communities all over the world have built monuments to create shared understandings of the war and its meaning. Today there are tens of thousands of World War I memorials worldwide, with still more in the planning stages. Williams will explore some of the ways these memorials, from the ruined Tannenberg Memorial in western Poland to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, have shaped society’s understanding of the ethics of war.
