School of Public Policy to Host Workshop for Local Government Practitioners

Pepperdine School of Public Policy, in partnership with the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership, will host a certification workshop for the professional certificate in advanced public engagement for local government.

The three-day intensive workshop will be held at Villa Graziadio Executive Center in Malibu from Friday, July 28, to Sunday, July 30, from 8 AM to 6 PM. Participants may also attend an optional dinner reception and kickoff seminar on Thursday, July 27, featuring special guest speaker Stephen Goldsmith.

Goldsmith is the Daniel Paul Professor of Practice of Government and the director of the Innovations in Government program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He directs Data-Smart City Solutions, the Project on Municipal Innovation, and the Civic Analytics Network, and is author of The Responsive City: Engaging Communities Through Data-Smart Governance. He has also served as deputy mayor of New York City and as mayor of Indianapolis.

This certification program, designed to meet the educational needs of local government practitioners—such as professionals from cities, counties, and special districts, private sector employees who serve local governments, and graduate students focused on local government—will allow mid-career employees to explore the context, purpose, and best practices for engaging residents in the decisions that affect their lives and communities.

The 10 sessions will include:

  • Why Public Engagement? Why Now?
  • Role Clarification
  • State of the Art Public Engagement
  • Public Engagement for Public Safety
  • Pitfalls, Common Errors & Warning Signs

Saturday, July 29
