Former Chief Justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye to Discuss What the Future Holds for Californians at President’s Speaker Series
On Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 12:30 PM in Caruso Auditorium, former chief justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye, the president and chief executive officer of the Public Policy Institute of California, will explore “What the Future Holds for Californians” at the latest installment of the President’s Speaker Series. As the first Asian-Filipina American and second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice, Cantil-Sakauye will discuss her passion for access to justice, her experiences as a woman of color in a leadership position, and the importance of civil discourse to sound statewide public policy. The conversation will be moderated by Naomi Goodno, professor of law at the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law.
As president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, Cantil-Sakauye holds the Walter and Esther Hewlett Chair in Understanding California’s Future. From 2011 to 2022 she served as the 28th chief justice of California. Prior to her election, she served more than 20 years on California appellate and trial courts and was appointed or elevated to higher office by three governors. Earlier in her career Cantil-Sakauye served as a deputy district attorney for the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and on the senior staff of California governor George Deukmejian, first as deputy legal affairs secretary and later as a deputy legislative secretary. She holds a BA and a JD from the University of California, Davis.
