Wolf Gruner to Speak on Jewish Defiance, Resistance, and Protest in Nazi Germany

Wolf Gruner, Shapell-Guerin Chair in Jewish Studies and Professor of History at USC, will speak on his recent findings of “Jewish Defiance, Resistance, and Protest in Nazi Germany” Thursday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Stauffer Chapel. This event is sponsored by the Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies at Pepperdine University.

Gruner, who has held the chair at USC since 2008, also serves as the director of the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. His areas of research include the history of the Holocaust and other genocides, comparative history of mass violence and its resistance, and racial and state discrimination against indigenous populations, especially in Latin America. His most current research centers on individual Jewish resistance and defiance during the Holocaust. He has published 14 books, including his latest, The Greater German Reich and the Jews: Nazi Persecution Policies in the Annexed Territories 1935-1945.

Gruner is also a member of the international academic advisory board at Yad Vashem's International Institute for Holocaust Research and, from 2010 to 2014, served as team leader of the USC Dornsife 2020 interdisciplinary research cluster: Resisting the Path to Genocides.
