Pepperdine University Kicks Off 2023 President’s Speaker Series with Michael J. Abramowitz

Freedom House president and democracy advocate Michael J. Abramowitz to discuss ‘The State of Freedom Around the World’

 


 

February 21, 2023 – Malibu, CA – In the first installment of Pepperdine University’s 2023 President’s Speaker Series, Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House, will discuss “The State of Freedom Around the World” via zoom Monday, March 13, at 6 PM PST.

Kiron Skinner, the Taube Professor of International Relations and Politics at the Pepperdine School of Public Policy, and president Jim Gash will join Abramowitz in this online discussion to explore the growing threats to democracy worldwide and the consecutive decline in global freedom over the last 16 years.

The President's Speaker Series welcomes distinguished scholars and thought leaders from diverse viewpoints to examine topics and issues facing our communities and the world today. Driven by a desire to connect deeply with the community and inspire meaningful dialogue, the series provides opportunities to cultivate an engaged and impassioned collective through civil discourse.

Michael J. Abramowitz is the president of Freedom House, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to supporting democracy, where he oversees a unique combination of analysis, advocacy and direct support to frontline defenders for freedom, specifically those working in closed authoritarian societies.

He formerly directed the US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Levine Institute for Holocaust Education and led the museum’s genocide prevention efforts. He spent the first 24 years of his career at The Washington Post, where he served as national editor and White House correspondent. 

Abramowitz is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former Marshall Memorial Fellow at the German Marshall Fund and media fellow at the Hoover Institution. A graduate of Harvard College, he is also a board member of the National Security Archive, a member of the Human Freedom Advisory Council for the George W. Bush Presidential Center, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue.
